If youโre wrapping up your grad school apps and in need of a boostโฆthisย one’s for you.
I remember the overwhelming feeling of discouragement as I kept comparing my path to my colleagues who submitted their apps several weeks before the deadline.
Balancing school, research, two jobs, extracurriculars, commuting, etc. was stressful. I knew that submitting my apps early to keep up with my colleagues wasn’t a realistic expectation for me. I knew Iโd have more free time during my winter break to put all my effort in and give it my best while finalizing each app…so thatโs what I did.
These 4 fixes helped me stay on track – I found them effective, and I wanted to share to help YOU get through it!
- Create a master and a daily to-do list.
Think of the application process as a long-term project. You’re almost there! - Each time you complete a task, set a reward for yourself.
Create reasonable deadlines for yourself to complete your tasks! My reward was 5 minutes of screen time.
I always use a pomodoro timer, which has been a great tool. - Realize when you’re burnt out, take a step back, and re-focus.
Being burnt out can result in some parts not being as strong as others, since the same amount of energy may not be put forth. Take a minute to stretch your legs out, walk around, and do some deep breathing.
Deep breathing helps me in any moment I am feeling overwhelmed. It’s a quick technique that aids with any angst/ jitters you’re feeling to help reset your nervous system. - Remember your “why”.
Write down your reasons for becoming a speech-language pathologist. This entire process can feel so defeating, but when you have the tangible reasons physicall right in front of you, your intentions are clear. Refer back to your “why” as an affirmation/reminder! I still do, even as I’m wrapping up my second year of graduate school.
If youโre finding yourself in a similar position, you WILL pull through this.
Set your intention, stay motivated, and do what you need to do!
