6 REASONS WHY AN INDEPENDENT STUDY CAN HELP YOU GET INTO GRAD SCHOOL

If you’re interested in gaining course credit while your own research, AND gaining an abundance of experience, you should complete an independent study! An independent study is an opportunity that allows you to gain course credit while exploring your own personal interests on a deeper level. The opportunities that open when you complete an independent study are amazing!

  1. You can earn course credit
Most universities have an option to complete an independent study to gain course credit for their work. Your advisor should provide you with the proper forms and equip you in the right direction to gain course credit.
  1. You gain direct research experience
You will work under a professor that will supervise your work. You will learn how to collect, analyze, and interpret data. If you have no prior research experience – itโ€™s okay! You will be able to learn from your professor, and grow from it.

  2. You can add it on your resume
For one of my independent studies, I worked with a professor who supervised my work, but I also collected data as I interned under an SLP at a local high school. So, in addition to gaining course credit, I gained an internship – it was a win-win situation!

  3. You can talk about an independent study on your personal statement and during your grad school interviews
This is something to showcase your interest within the field and a great talking point! It allows you to explain your interest in the field, why you chose to complete your research topic, etc.

  4. You can present at research conferences
Presenting at conferences allows you to network with individuals, in addition to gaining feedback about your work. Research conferences are a great way to showcase your work with other researchers, enhance your communication/public speaking abilities, and receive feedback! I participated at two research conferences that my university held and it was a wonderful learning experience!

  5. You can ask your professor for a letter of recommendation
Your professor that you conducted your independent study with has been able to see your abilities first-hand. Your professor can talk about your academic skills, research skills, and your work ethic!
