BEING IN A SORORITY CAN GET YOU INTO GRAD SCHOOL!

If you’re in a sorority and you’re on applying to graduate school, you most likely have a leg up in your applications, as most graduate schools look for applicants with diverse backgrounds. Yes, having nearly perfect GPA/GRE scores will help, but they look for people who have unique experiences. If you were like me and your stats are average-ish and you’re in a sorority, keep reading. Why? Being involved is what helped me get into over 10+ graduate schools, more than half being the top 50 ranked in the nation, and it can help you too.

I was part of a sorority for my entire collegiate career, and served as my sororityโ€™s philanthropy chair for the next two years. I loved what I was doing – I was involved lots of philanthropic and volunteer work when I was younger, so it was beyond rewarding to take on this role. I enjoyed taking on this executive position to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, it was all for the kids!

No matter what leadership role you serve, taking any role demonstrates initiative, responsibility, and proactiveness amongst an organization of over 100+ members. Not to mention, you gain lifelong skills, such as collaboration, detail-orientation, and problem-solving, which are essential as an SLP.

In addition to gaining these skills, you are able to expand your network and open an endless window of opportunities. Being part of a sorority allowed me to make connections with nationwide companies and organizations, and the rest of Greek life. As a result, I worked on a collaborative research project with the renowned Ann & Robert H. Lurie Childrenโ€™s Hospital of Chicago, which also enhanced my graduate school applications.

Your sorority can help you get out of your comfort zone and immerse yourself in opportunities that will pave paths to success. With the experiences you can gain from being part of a sorority, it can be a life-changing experience that can equip you with tools for success. Additionally, your chapter advisor can write you a letter of recommendation since she has first-hand knowledge of your great leadership & skills!

I rushed my freshman year of college with one of my best friends from home. I wasnโ€™t into the whole idea of being in a sorority, given the stereotypical ideas of it, but I ended up falling in love with my sororityโ€™s philanthropy. I decided to ~trust the process~ (if you know, you know) and it allowed me to be part of something bigger than myself. In the duration of being philanthropy chair, we gained multiple awards for our philanthropic and community efforts. I felt encouraged through all of my goals (yes, even non-sorority related), while inspired me to become a better version of myself. This organization shaped who I was & who I wanted to be!

If you’re a member of your sorority and you only go to mandatory chapters just so you can attend formals & mixers – get involved. By doing so, it allows you to tailor your resume and graduate school applications to stand out, in addition to gaining lifelong skills & a letter of recommendation. There are plenty of opportunities waiting for you!

As always, reach out with any questions/comments by sending me a message!
