I’m a graduate student at Northwestern University, the top 2 ranked speech-language pathology program.

I created this website to help students navigate their way through their educational journey by sharing my own story, providing resources, and advice. I aspire to empower students, resonate with them, and help them be successful.

As evidence-based clinicians, research holds significant value to our careers. I cannot thank researchers enough for all their efforts!

With that being said, I wanted to highlight @northwesterncll for all the wonderful work contributing to our profession!

⭐️ Child Language Lab (CLL) is a BILINGUAL child development lab driven by culturally responsive, equitable, and inclusive efforts led by the amaaazing Dr. Adriana Weisleder!

⭐️ CLL seeks to understand differences in early language development by examining young children’s learning abilities and their experiences with language and communication.

⭐️ CLL is especially interested in how diverse cultural and communicative experiences influence language learning!

After taking a much needed hiatus to wrap up my final year of graduate school, I feel proud to share that I’m a M.S., CF-SLP!

I’m honored to officially enter the field and contribute to the rise of the…
♦️3% of 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 speech-language pathologists
♦️8% of 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿
♦️18% of first-generation Vietnamese-Americans obtaining a postgraduate degree (PEW Research Center)

The intersectionality of being a first-generation child of immigrants and finding my sense of belonging in this field created harsh narratives that didn’t serve me.

After continual efforts to recognize this, I...
♦️𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 upon my lived experiences
♦️𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 the privilege I have to attain higher education and in SLP
♦️𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 those narratives to fuel my “why”

With this being said, I am dedicated to providing the utmost person-centered, affirming, and empowering care.

I enter this profession with a sense of 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, and 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 to serve diverse populations across the lifespan.

𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗜 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱,𝗺𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲.

As a lifelong learner, I am looking forward to a career filled with robust growth and collaboration.

I’m thankful for the patients/clients/students that shaped my experiences and entrusted me to be part of their cognitive-communication, speech, language, and swallowing rehabilitation.

My heart is filled with gratitude from my support system of family, friends, professors, clinical instructors, and colleagues who made a significant impact on my journey.

I am truly appreciative for all of the love and support the SLP IG community has shown me over the last few years.

𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀, 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘁...this 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 came to mind when I 𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 thought of a school-based SLP (which can also be found in other settings).

⭐️ 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 completing my school practicum, I wasn’t too interested in this setting due to what I heard from other SLPs' experiences.

⏩ However, 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 I recently completed my public school practicum working with 56 students across IEP and RTI services, my supervisor, students, and faculty made me LOVE the school setting.

⭐️ With this being said, I dug a bit deeper into 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗟𝗣 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀, and I wanted to showcase these numbers.

🚨 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗥: This is from ASHA’s 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 School Survey: Annual Salaries and Hourly Wages Report (2020). The reported medians (the middle number) are 𝗻𝗼𝘁 exhaustive of ALL school-based SLPs. Clinicians make below/above the listed numbers.

⭐️ During my school practicum course, I learned that many school-based SLPs start at the MA level on a teacher’s salary scale, (and they could start higher on the ladder depending on the district).

⭐️ Schools typically have a set salary budget allotted... But given the rigor of clinical and didactic training within our field, I believe that SLPs should have their own salary scale.

⭐️ I came across this article about a clinician who successfully negotiated a separate salary scale for school-based SLPs, and I linked it below.

There’s often misinformation when it comes to pre-accredited (also known as accreditation candidacy status) graduate programs, which leads to fear for applicants who are considering these programs.

⭐️ I applied to a few pre-accredited graduate programs myself, so I completely understand this fear…

⭐️ After digging into the pre-accreditation process myself and working closely with a clinician who conducts site visits for the CAA, my fears subsided.

💡 I’m sharing this information with you all to avoid the fear and debunk any misinformation you might come across!

🚨 PSA: Don’t believe everything that everyone says — ask questions and do your due diligence!

🚨 Just because a program is pre-accredited, does NOT mean that you won’t earn your CCC’s or that the program will not be accredited.

They are in the accreditation process, hence “pre” in pre-accreditation.

📌 I worked with a bilingual client with aphasia. For his stimuli, I implemented his culture’s foods, holidays, and traditions to repair anomic breakdowns in both Spanish and English. I built great rapport with my client; he loved learning about my culture as well.⠀

📌 When Google searching images, it was often more difficult to find targeted stimuli depicting children of color. I had a Black client and I wanted him to be represented in his teletherapy materials. So, I spent more time trying to find targeted stimuli that were representative of my client.⠀

📌 One of my teen clients often experienced frustrations with word retrieval. I said, “I know you don’t want to be here right now and I understand this is hard. It’s hard for me to find the words I’m thinking about, too. We are working on this to make it easier for you to find the words you’re thinking about”. After empathizing with my client, his frustrations subsided afterward and he fully participated.

📌 I’ve also made mistakes. One of my clients used pronouns “they/them/their” - my team incorrectly used their pronouns the entire term. However, I had no idea until I asked my supervisor about this at the end of the term, when I saw “they” used on an email referring to my client. My supervisor noted she didn’t know either as my client recently identified using “they/them/their” pronouns. Moving forward, we utilized my client’s correct pronouns.⠀

⭐️ 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗬𝗦: You need to ask questions. You might feel uncomfortable. Things might take extra time. You 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 make mistakes along the way, but you learn from them as you go.⠀

🚨 By NO means am I an expert, but as a budding clinician, these are a few experiences that I’m proud of that highlight my efforts.
